WHAT IS ORIGAMI?
The brilliant shapes and designs of Origami have enchanted many throughout the centuries. Origami (pronounced “or-a-GA-me”) is an old Japanese art of creating various freestanding shapes by folding one piece of paper. The word “origami” actually means, “to fold paper.” “Oru” means “folding, and “kami” means “paper” in Japanese. Somehow, over the years, the “k” in “kami” has been turned into a soft “g” sound.

PURPOSE OF ORIGAMI
The purpose or objective of Origami is to use a number of different geometric folds to create an object that resembles something familiar or unfamiliar – from a crane to an abstract shape.

FACTS ABOUT ORIGAMI
The artistic origami enthusiast’s concern is bringing out the expression of the paper. The paper itself is extremely important to their work. They employ methods like wet folding, cutting edges, or making their own paper.
November 11th is Origami Day in Japan. Origami enthusiasts are helping spread the joy of paper folding by taking part in “World Origami Days,” a 2 ½-week celebration beginning October 24 to November 11 of each year. You can help spread the joy by finding ways to share origami with others.

HISTORY OF ORIGAMI
The exact origins of Origami aren’t known although it is widely believed that the skill of paper folding began in China in the 6th century and that monks then took that skill to Japan.
The first written instructions are believed to have appeared in AD 1797. These instructions were part of the Japanese publication Senbazuru Orikata (Thousand Crane Folding).

I've always been fascinated with what can be done with a simple piece of paper. It's amazing to see the complex shapes/animals that people can make.

Interesting. I've never really given origami a second thought. My kids played around with it, and I know what it is, but I didn't realize that it could be used as a teaching tool and as a form of therapy.

Definitely something I have never done. My daughter really likes to do it but I can't see myself having the patience. I think it could be some good therapy for some people though.

I too had no idea how many uses it could be used for. Have made the normal paper objects as a kid but mya have to look at this closer.

I'm not sure I'd have the patience for it. The kids do have a kit here somewhere. May take it up north when we're on holidays and give it another shot. It's interesting all the things you can do with it

I've watched my wife do lots of amazing things with paper folding. I once saw a person fold a dollar bill into a swan. But I have never tried it myself. I just watch the wife entertain the grandkids with it. Also never knew that folding paper had a name. Not sure I can even say it. Interesting post.

The early Chinese and Japanese cultures were very stressful for most people, and even for their warriors there was the knowledge that battle and fights needed to be balanced against finer arts, like oragami and floral arranging.

One of the most overlooked benefits of origami is the peace and calm it invokes, requiring you to relax and proceed calmly.
